Dr. Betty G. Miller, who resides in Washington, DC, was born to Deaf parents in Chicago, IL. She could talk and lipread. etty G. Miller was born in 1934, and her parents were both Deaf. She is primarily known for her visual representation of her deaf experience, some of which has been published in “Deaf Heritage” by Jack Gannon (1980). She left Gallaudet in 1977 to co-found Spectrum, Focus on Deaf Artists.

Since then her work has inspired several Deaf visual artists to create work based on their Deaf experiences. I am the Deaf Education Specialist for Tuscarora High School.

In 1971, Betty G. Miller began expressing her Deaf experiences through her paintings and drawings. As with her older brothers, her first language is American Sign Language (ASL). Because she was hard of hearing and picked up speech and English from hearing family members, her hearing loss wasn't discovered until she started Kindergarten. These artists often discussed whether or not there was a “Deaf Art” — a genre or school of thought. The Betty G. Miller Fellowship Award was named in her honor; it provides financial assistance to deaf women pursuing doctorate degrees at Gallaudet University. I...Butterfly (Neon) by Betty G. Her parents, having suffered through their own experiences of oppression, didn't want the same for their daughter and were determined that she would make the best use of what hearing she had. Miller has participated in numerous art shows in Washington DC, Maryland, Texas, California and Massachusetts. The desire to stop time, to capture moments, is at the heart of each photograph and gives it a poignant, nostalgic feeling. Museum professionals may use this blog as a resource for improving the accommodations they provide for Deaf visitors. In the eighties and nineties, she continued with her one-woman and group art shows, with a theme titled, “The Deaf Experience” which were held in Takoma Park, Maryland, 1989, at Gallaudet University, in 1989, 1990, and 1992; and in the Capitol Hill area in Washington DC, and in Chicago, Illinois, 1992 and 1993. Her years at Gallaudet began her transformation from a naive hard of hearing girl to a proud deaf rebel who was years ahead of others in embracing signs as a true and natural language, and deafness as a difference, not a handicap.Betty G.
