He is interesting in that he was born as a British prince and the son of Queen Victoria, and ruled the German state of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha.

Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was the fourth child of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.Born at Windsor Castle in Windsor, England on August 6, 1844, Alfred was christened on September 6, 1844, in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle with the names Alfred Ernest Albert. With his future role as Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha in mind, in 1865 Alfred purchased a palace in Coburg, just across the square from Schloss Ehrenburg, the official ducal residence. he abdicated the throne because he was already then Prince of Wales. And in June 1893, he was made Admiral of the Fleet, the highest rank in the British Navy.The transition to his new position was not easy. When the gas lamps were lit the calico caught fire and the building burnt down.A skilled and efficient naval tactician, the Prince was promoted rear-admiral in 1878, vice-admiral in 1882, admiral in 1887, and received his baton as Admiral of the Fleet, 3 June 1893. This proved the last straw in the Duke and Duchess's troubled marriage, and Alfred drank himself to death over the course of the next year, dying in 1900.The Prince married the Grand-Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, only daughter of Alexander II, Emperor of Russia, in St Petersburg in 1874. He gave up his annuity and his seat in the House of Lords and became the first person to voluntarily resign from the Privy Council.

On January 24, 1867, Alfred set sail on HMS Galatea for a trip around the world. Alfred became the reigning duke of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha much later, only in the 50th year of his life. There he owned two city-residences: Coburg and Gothu, each of which had impressive castles. Clontarf remained a cheap suburb, with a tent city springing up in the Depression of the 1930s, but a new bridge in 1958 made it more accessible. Thus the throne belonged to his brother – the aforementioned Alfred – who became the new ruling duke of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha.Alfred as the reigning duke of Saxony-Coburg-Gotha did indeed move to Germany. For all of its incidents, the tour was considered a great success, and helped to create a sense of unity for the young colony.Some sources suggest that Prince Alfred supplemented his income by charging introductions to his relatives, including his brother, the Prince of Wales and future King (Edward VIII). Prince Alfred of Edinburgh was bora on October 15th, 1874 at Buckingham Palace. Tents collapsed, wine buckets were snatched and mayhem ensued. Alfred was quickly taken to Government House in Sydney, where he spent several weeks recovering before again assuming command of his ship and returning home in June 1868.
