On 1st May 1883 the town acquired yet another Huntingdon Station with the extension of the Ely & Huntingdon line close to the Huntingdon GNR station. The line had originally been conceived by the GER but approval was authorized instead to the rival Great Northern Railway.  Many years of quarrelling were finally resolved on 3rd July 1879 when the Spalding line and the March to St. Ives section of the Cambridge to Wisbech line was vested in the GN&GE Joint Railway.The merger of the Eastern Counties Railway with the Eastern Union and other East Anglian railways to form the Great Eastern Railway (GER) in August 1862 caused a change in policy regarding official encouragement for local branch lines. St Ives St Ives railway station opened in 1887 and chugged on until 1970. The remaining track was lifted within a year of closure and much of the trackbed reverted to farmland or because of its raised position above the surrounding fenlands, as access roads.Because of the orientation of the terminus at Sutton a new station was build with the old station being retained for goods. Thus in late 1863, two prominent landowners from Wilburton and Haddenham campaigned for a line winning the support of other local landowners in the area to promote the building of a railway linking Ely with Sutton and a Bill to construct the line received Royal Assent in June 1864. The blast gouged a crater 15 feet deep and 66 feet wide.Although the majority of the track is still in place it would need to be replaced to allow new trains to run and existing level crossings would need to be upgraded to modern standards.After it was closed Swavesy Station remained abandoned until it was demolished in 2007 ahead of the construction of the busway.Four other stations would also be closed as part of that round of cuts, at Histon, Oakington, Longstanton and Swavesey.It has since been viewed as an act of social vandalism, by cutting off rural communities and stagnating local economic growth.The seven miles of railway from March to Wisbech closed to passenger services in 1968 and to rail freight in 2000.It first opened in 1879 and was situated on the Ely to Newmarket line.Stations we lost included, Saffron Walden, Haverhill, Linton, Chatteris and Bartlow, as well as much of the old Varsity Line between Cambridge and Oxford.Soham railway station closed to passengers in 1965.Oakington Station opened in 1847 and was closed in 1970.It was name checked in a popular 1963 song commemorating the Beeching cuts, Slow Train by British music duo Flanders and Swann.Campaigners say reopening the line would connect the 30,000 people living in Wisbech and the surrounding area with the national rail network.Sign up to our newsletter for daily updates and breaking newsBartlow Station was one of the oldest stations in the region, having been constructed in 1865.St Ives railway station opened in 1887 and chugged on until 1970.Despite this, the station served its last passengers until 1965, and there has been a fiercely fought local campaign to have it reinstated ever since.It was part of the Saffron Walden line that got the chop in 1964.

Lack of finance resulted in the abandonment of the Ely – St. Ives section but the East Anglian Railway which had acquired the Ely and Huntingdon, resurrected the scheme and obtained an Act of Parliament in July 1849 to build the railway but the authorised time for construction lapsed and the line was subsequently shelved.In the late 1920’s and 1930’s the branch was at its busiest between June and November.
